About LEAD

In the wake of the Supreme Court’s recent anti-affirmative action rulings and the federal and private rollbacks of racial justice initiatives, many organizations have been left wondering how their work to advance racial equity and civil rights is impacted. The truth is that racial justice programs remain legal. However, many nonprofits and funders need accessible resources and hands-on support to navigate the complicated legal landscape, prepare themselves in this pivotal moment, and chart a path forward.

That’s why in 2024, the Black Freedom Fund joined forces with legal experts, advocates, and philanthropic leaders to launch the Legal Education, Advocacy, and Defense (LEAD) for Racial Justice Initiative, providing strategic guidance to California organizations and foundations to help them fully understand the legal landscape and their ability to conduct and invest in vital racial equity work.

Through training, organizational assessments and technical assistance, and forward-looking solutions, LEAD for Racial Justice builds capacity for nonprofits and foundations and strengthens our collective resolve to advance racial justice.

Other states have begun to launch their own LEAD Initiatives, including Minnesota, Washington, and Oregon.
